International Day for the Right to the Truth about Gross Human Rights Violations
On 24 March, the International Day for the Right to the Truth about Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims, we commemorate the countless people worldwide who have suffered serious human rights violations in the past and present. This day reminds us not only of the terrible acts that many victims have had to endure, but also of the unshakeable right to truth, justice and recognition of the dignity of those affected.
For the Lazarus Union as an NGO with general consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), this day has a special significance. As part of a global community committed to human rights, justice and the protection of the dignity of every individual, we understand the role of truth and dialogue as central building blocks for sustainable peace and the promotion of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, especially in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The role of truth and justice in the context of the SDGs
The SDGs, in particular Goal 16 – “Peace, justice and strong institutions” – require us to protect the right to truth and ensure that human rights violations are recognised and prosecuted. Only by transparently addressing crimes against humanity and honouring the victims can we contribute to a just and sustainable society in which no human being is left behind. In this context, the International Day for the Right to Truth also emphasises the need to investigate past and present human rights violations in order to honour the victims and hold the perpetrators accountable.
NGO responsibility and the importance of co-operation
As an NGO recognised by the United Nations, the Lazarus Union has the unique opportunity to work at a global level with international organisations, governments and other actors to promote the principles of human rights and justice. Our work includes both supporting victims of human rights violations and promoting dialogue between different actors to find sustainable solutions for the recognition of truths and respect for the dignity of victims.
We are committed to ensuring that the rights of victims and their voices are heard. In line with the United Nations Declaration of Principles on the Right to the Truth, which reinforces victims’ rights to truth, justice and reparation, the Lazarus Union actively contributes to defending these rights in our work and in the international community. Protecting the dignity and rights of people who have suffered human rights violations is a fundamental element of our work and an important part of our support for the Sustainable Development Goals.
A call for solidarity and responsibility
On the International Day for the Right to Truth and for the Dignity of Victims, we call on everyone to recognise our shared responsibility. We encourage governments, international organisations and civil society to continue to work for truth and justice, especially for the many victims of human rights violations worldwide. The Lazarus Union will continue to do its part to ensure that the dignity of victims is respected, that truth and justice are prioritised in the international community and that no one remains in the darkness of oblivion.
Together for the rights of victims – for truth, justice and the promotion of peace and dignity worldwide.
